Update, 2025: It’s been 15 years since I first wrote this, but I still think about how a chance connection with a customer can quite literally change your life. Kiana was a joy to work with, and I admired her deeply for the incredible work she did at New Beginnings—a nonprofit that supports survivors of domestic abuse. Years later, during one of the hardest times in my life, I reached out to them. A phone counselor gently talked me through what I needed to do next. Ever since, I’ve chosen to support New Beginnings in honor of that moment of connection. These are the stories that matter most.
At last year’s Urban Craft Uprising Show, I met Kiana – who was planning a trip to Turkey and wanted a large bag she could securely carry all of her essentials, and wear-cross body. She chose the Charleston Crossbody Bag, and asked me to incorporate turquoise into the style.
So I went overboard with turquoise topstitching on the outside, sweeping from side to side like doing the dance the bag was named for, and then added a splash of tidepool teal color to the pockets inside. It was so freaking fun.
She was sweet enough to send me photos of her on her travels.
